Schools In California – Accredited List

California, “the Golden State”, has a population of 37,253,956 people, making it the most populous state in the United States.  Not surprisingly, California students, and the many students who come from other states and nations to be educated in California, have virtually limitless higher education options.  The primary college and university accrediting agency in California is the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).

California has well over 100 community colleges, a significant number of which offer both on-campus and online courses and programs.  As of fall 2015, tuition at California community colleges was a modest $44 per credit hour, allowing a full time student to pay tuition of as little as $528 per semester.

California has two state university systems; the University of California System and the California State University System. The UC system is comprised of ten universities, the best known of which may be in Los Angeles and Berkeley.  Some of the UC system universities are highly selective, including Berkeley, UC Davis, and UC Santa Barbara.  The Cal State system is by far the larger of the two, with 23 campuses, covering the state from Humboldt to San Diego.

There are more than 50 independent schools and colleges in California.  Students who want to attend a stand- alone visual arts or design-related program have a lot of choices; Art Center College of Design, California College of the Arts, Laguna College of Art and Design, Otis College of Art and Design, and San Francisco Art Institute.  California Institute is the most competitive of the group, admitting fewer than 4 in 10 applicants. Musicians seeking a stand-alone specialty institution can apply to San Francisco Conservatory of Music (which also admits fewer than 4 of 10 applicants).

There are many selective private colleges in California; the most selective, with the percentage of applicants admitted, are Stanford University (5%), California Institute of Technology (9%), Claremont McKenna (11%), Pomona College (11%), and University of Southern California (18%).

In addition to the aforementioned institutions, California hosts a service-focused university founded as the sister school of a Japanese university, several Catholic institutions, more than a dozen religiously-affiliated institutions, and a small university with highly ranked online degree offerings.

California Colleges At A Glance
