Illinois, “the prairie state”, has nearly 13 million residents, making it more populous than all but four U.S. states. The Illinois Community College Board oversees a system of 48 colleges serving approximately a million students in certificate, degree, dual credit, and continuing education programs. Chicago alone, the largest city in the state and the third largest city in the nation, has six community colleges; Harold Washington College, Harry S. Truman College, Kennedy-King College, Malcolm X College, Olive-Harvey College, Richard J. Daley College, and Wilbur Wright College. Only two states have larger community college systems.

Illinois supports four-year universities on twelve campuses. The University of Illinois serves almost 29,000 on its Chicago campus, where it offers 83 undergraduate, 93 master’s, and 64 doctoral degree programs. The Springfield campus of the university offers 24 bachelor’s degree programs, 20 master’s degree programs, and a doctoral degree in public administration (DPA). UIS serves a total of 5,000, including those enrolled in online certificate and online degree programs. The main campus of the university, located in Urbana-Champaign, admits more than 60% of its undergraduate applicants, and serves upwards of 43,000 students in undergraduate, graduate, and professional school programs. The three campuses of the University of Illinois offer extensive online education options, including a total of 159 online degree and online certificate programs.

There are over 60 non-profit, independent colleges and universities in Illinois, the highest profile and most selective of which are University of Chicago and Northwestern University. Religiously affiliated colleges include Trinity Christian College, Trinity International University, Wheaton College, Lincoln Christian University, Moody Bible Institute, and DePaul University, the largest of several Catholic four-year institutions in the state. For-profit Illinois colleges include American InterContinental University, Argosy University, and University of Phoenix, all of which have campuses in many states and all of which award both traditional and online degrees.

Specialty higher education institutions include Harrington College of Design, Illinois Center for Broadcasting, Illinois Institute of Art, Illinois School of Professional Psychology, Midwest College of Oriental Medicine, Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago, and VanderCook College of Music.

Online Colleges In Illinois

Illinois is home to many top-ranked traditional colleges and universities. As the 21st century continues to progress forward, most colleges in the state have recognized the changing times and have begun to offer an extensive amount of online degree programs. Even in 2012, over 10% of the students enrolled in Title IV postsecondary institutions were taking their degree programs completely online. That number has undoubtedly grown since that time, and Illinois has continued to grow and compete with its neighbors in attracting distance learners. With over 100 colleges and universities in the state offering accredited online degree programs, prospective students will find that they have a wide range of options to choose from, both from relatively inexpensive public colleges to colleges and universities that offer advanced degrees for well above the national average tuition cost.

Some of the best online degree programs in the state can be located at the state’s public institutions. Prospective students will find that, while these schools offer their programs at significantly higher tuition rates than the national average (this includes both in-state and out-of-state tuition rates), most of the colleges and their programs are ranked well both regionally and nationally by the U.S. News and World Report.

The University of Illinois has several campuses that offer their programs online. The University of Illinois at Springfield is well ranked, sitting high on several lists. The university is #20 for Best Online Bachelor’s Programs, #16 for Best Online Graduate Business Programs (Excluding MBA), #75 for Best Online Graduate Programs and #17 for Best MS in MIS Online Degrees. The University of Illinois at Springfield is also #42 among Regional Universities (Midwest). The school offers a wide variety of online degree programs, up to the Master’s degree level, and delivered through the industry-standard Blackboard learning management system. Prospective students can explore such valuable Bachelor’s degree programs as Computer Science, English, History, Mathematics and MAnagement Information Systems, among others. Master’s degree programs range from such areas as Computer Science, Environmental Science, Human Services Administration, Political Science and Teacher Leadership, among several other options. There are also 13 graduate certificate programs available, including Business Intelligence, Geographic Information Systems, Legal Aspects of Education and Chief School Business Officer (which is a Post Master’s certificate).

The state’s flagship public institution, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, offers an eclectic variety of online degree options. The university is reasonably ranked by the U.S. News and World Report at #82 for Best Online Bachelor’s Programs, #47 for Best Online Graduate Education Programs and #35 for Best Online Graduate Engineering Programs. The school has 15 programs available for those seeking an online learning experience for their Bachelor’s degree. Business Administration, Computer Science, Philosophy and Political Science are just a few of the options available for undergraduates. For graduates, a total of 52 programs are available across a wide range of options, including Crop Sciences, Engineering, Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences and Technology Specialist. There is one Doctorate available online, in Public Health.

Prospective students will find that many postsecondary schools in Illinois offer great value, great variety and excellent credentials.
