Schools In Indiana

Indiana, the “Hoosier State”, is home to more than seven million people. Students in Indiana can choose from among more than 50 colleges, universities, and post-secondary career schools, several of which have multiple campuses. Indiana University and Purdue University, the two largest institutions in the state, enroll 46,000 and 39,000 students respectively.

IU may be best known for its strong music program, while Purdue’s reputation is based largely on the quality of its engineering offerings. Indiana admits a generous 72% of its undergraduate applicants, while Purdue is a bit more selective, sending letters offering admission to a little below 60% of those who apply for admission.

IU has seven campuses throughout the state; Purdue has 6, as well as a division which offers online degrees at the master’s level in fields of study such as communications, learning design and technology, special education, aerospace management, and engineering. The community college system, Ivy Tech, has campuses in more than thirty towns and cities, and awards more year two-year degrees than any community college system in the nation.

Other relatively large state institutions are Indiana State University, which offers bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorates in more than 100 fields to about 12,500 students, Ball State University, which enrolls more than twenty thousand, and the University of Southern Illinois, with 10,000 students pursuing degrees in 80 majors.

There are 9 Catholic colleges and universities in Indiana, the best known of which is University of Notre Dame, which enrolls more than 10 thousand students. The most selective Catholic institution in the United States, Notre Dame admits just over one in five applicants.

Other notable institutions awarding degrees in Indiana include DePauw University, Earlham College, Hanover College, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, a small college known for high quality engineering programs, and Governors State University, which offers online degrees in 50 areas at the undergraduate and master’s levels.
