Texas Schools – Overview & Evaluations

Some people…including most Texans…believe that everything is bigger in the Lone Star state.  That’s certainly true about higher education.  In fact, if you count all of the community colleges, four-year colleges and universities, technical colleges, and career colleges (including the for-profits), the total you get is well over 500.  The most selective colleges in Texas include the state’s flagship, the University of Texas at Austin, Rice University, and Southern Methodist University, which frequently appear in lists of “best” colleges.  Several other Texas institutions enjoy deservedly strong reputations that enable them to attract students from throughout the United States and abroad.

Texas has more than 6 HBCU’s.

The largest universities in the state are Texas A&M and UT Austin, both with student populations of about 50,000 and the University of North Texas, with an enrollment of more than 35,000.  The extensive community college system features multiple campuses in and around major cities including Austin, Dallas/Fort Worth, and Houston.

Several dozen Texas colleges and degrees offer online degrees at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Although Texas has one of the worst high school graduation rates in the nation, the assignment of petroleum tax revenues to higher education has enabled the state to develop a strong, vibrant public higher education system.  The highest profile independent institutions have also enjoyed great financial support, albeit from private sources.
